About PlantSwitch: Building the future of plastics.

PlantSwitch makes CompostZero™ from PHA, a polymer that nature already produces. We ferment renewable feedstocks, harvest the polymer and turn it into finished products. Because PHA already exists in soil and seawater, microbes already carry the enzymes to consume it. That’s why it returns to nature instead of accumulating in it.

What CompostZero™ is

Breaks down, not apart.

PHA is a material made in nature by bacteria in small amounts. We have developed the technology to produce it at commercial scale. Because PHA is already part of the natural world, the microbes in soil, compost and ocean water already know how to eat it. Conventional plastic has to break apart. PHA gets broken down.

How it works

Made by nature. Returns to nature.

  1. We ferment renewable feedstocks. Microbes make PHA, a polymer nature already produces, and we harvest it.

  2. Our proprietary process turns that PHA into CompostZero™, at a lower cost than others in the industry.

  3. Injection molding, sheet extrusion, thermoforming and extrusion-coated paper. We make the resin, develop the application and manufacture the finished product.

  4. Cups, lids, cutlery and straws with performance on par with plastic.

  5. Certified home compostable. It breaks down at ordinary temperatures, with no industrial facility required.

  6. Microbes metabolize it into CO2, water and biomass. It breaks down, not apart, with No Forever Microplastics. Then the loop starts again.
